Kaigen spent the first part of the day completing the maintenance of his gear, then working through a series of practice kata.
Then, to his horror, he realized he had nothing to do for the rest of the day except eat.
Maybe I can insult someone and have a good fight... wait, that'd reflect poorly on my hosts.
Hrm.
Run around the estate in full armor? Five times?
Should at least see me through to midday.
Kaigen started running.

Kasumi had taken her two children outside to see a bit of nature around the estate. They had to learn about plants and which ons are edible, especially science she was trying to get her son a place in the dojo of the bounty hunters. Now she was a direct assistant of the emerald champion she could get her children in more prestigeous dojos. "Mama, mama," her oldest got her out of her thoughts. He pointed at Kaigen who was running around the estate. As Tsuruchi normaly didn't use heavy armour, it was something they hadn't seen yet. "It's not polite to point," Kasumi said to her son, before calling out to Kaigen in such a way that he could ignore her should he wish to do so, as she didn't want to interupt his exercises if he didn't want to talk.

A mother with her children.
Hrm. Not something I have a lot of experience with...
Damn. I seem to have veered toward them. Right. I will hit Kasumi with a shoulder tackle and overrun both children, and keep running until I hit the sea, no doubt covered in enough arrow shafts to be mistaken for a charging forest.
Don't suppose that would go over too well.
I seem to be slowing down.
"Tsuruchi-san."

"Shiba-san," she replied with a bow. Her children immitated her bow, but kept silent for now. "How are you today? My apologies for being such a poor host, but I wanted to spent some time with my children. Don't touch that." The last was directed to her daughter, who wanted to touch Kaigen's armour. Startled, she withdrew behind her mother.

"I am well, Tsuruchi-san. And there is nothing wrong with attending to one's family."
He glanced at the children, and arched an eyebrow at the daughter.
"Curious, hm?"

With Kaigen's scruteny on her she withdrew even more behind her mother. Masaru, being older, looked at Kaigen in his armour with the unfamiliar mon. "Are you my uncle," he asked timidly.

Kaigen's eyebrows went up again at this.
"Your uncle? Not so far as I know, but perhaps your mother or father might surprise me with some family connection..."
Oh, mother would absolutely loathe this. Not just Mantis, but Tsuruchi in the bargain!
Mother dear, I hope you understand, this is entirely intentional. Just for you.

"Masaru," Kasumi said sternly, "what have I told you only yesterday?" "Sorry, mama," the boy said, before turning to Kaigen, "my apologies... Shiba-sama." Kasumi had made a signal to the nanny who had been standing a bit further to take the children away. "They still have to learn," Kasumi said to Kaigen when they were gone, "it will get better as soon as he starts at the dojo."

Kaigen gave a dismissive wave of his hand.
"They'll have plenty of time to become proper and respectable later. Children can be forgiven much in the years before their gempukku."
After all, I'd hate to think they'll grow up to be as old and disappointing as the rest of us.
"And their directness is refreshing after my recent... courtly entanglements."

"At least court in the Crab lands is also very direct, especially when compared to Crane courts," Kasumi said, "it comes from their wall duty. You have to be direct there or it gets people killed."

"It's still Court."
He almost spat on the ground.
A bunch of pointless fops and useless stuffed kimono lying to each other and pretending they serve anything but themselves.
"A bunch of pointless fops and useless stuffed kimono lying to each other and pretending they serve anything but themselves."
I just said that out loud, didn't I?
Hm. Maybe I'll get to see how well this armor holds up to Tsuruchi marksmanship. Probably not terribly well.

Kasumi smiled at his comment. She actually agreed after a number of years as yojimbo in court, although the courtier she had to protect hadn't been that bad. But it was simply not done to say something like that out loud. "I should say to you the same thing I said to my son yesterday," she said, "although I must admit court isn't my favourite either. But it still serves a purpose."

"I remain unconvinced. It seems an end unto itself."
Still haven't been shot. Day's going well!
"But no matter. I would hope your children have to endure no more than duty and necessity require."

"There are not that many Tsuruchi courtiers," Kasumi said, "so I doubt they will be in courts much. We're still looking for dojo's, but not in courtier schools, at least not at the moment."

"For which they should thank the Fortunes."
Had I been born a Doji, without doubt the Crane Clan would have been wiped from the face of Rokugan by now.
