"I've served a year on the wall and later some time in Crab courts," Kasumi said, "I know them quite well. And I've solved the problem in Yasuki Yachiki, so I have some extra credit with the crab. Don't worry, it's just a precaution, but if there's one thing I've learned from the Kuni it's that it's better to be safe than sorry. I'd rather have them do a test against the taint which is negative than not to do the test and later having problems."

Of course, we could have left that shrieking nightmare where we found it and nature would have taken its course.
Perhaps that's a trifle harsh.
Right. Tell it to my eardrums, my nostrils, my...

"There's always some, with Otosan Uchi so close by," Kasumi said, "well, I have to go now. I will let you know if I have results." After another bow, she left the imperial barracks. She passed by the Lion embassy and gave the numbers to one of the guards, to be delivered with Kitsu Hiraku. Next stop was the Crab embassy for a Kuni Shujenja or witch hunter. And like she had said to Kaigen, since the fall of Otosan Uchi the Crab had maintained a larger presence here to keep an eye out. If there were no Kuni at the embassy, there certainly would be some in the field with the Crab soldiers was posted here.

After Hiraku received the information from Kasumi, passed by one of the guards, he immedietely got to work, which was in this case speaking to the Lions that were currently in the embassy, to acquire answer to a few more of his questions. He was succesful at that, since one of the older guards stationed there told him that someone from his family knew something about the monastery, and more importantly, he knew some of the monks. Hiraku thanked him for sending a letter asking for those details and then moved back to his chambers, to prepare a plan for the 'travel' he was going to go on.

Kasumi arrived at the Crab embassy where she was immediately admitted. She was in the meantime quite well known in Crab lands, due to her time on the wall, her time in Crab courts, her marriage to a Hida and her actions at Yasuki Yachiki. She was brought to a waiting room while the Hida guards went for a Kuni Shugenja. "I'm Kuni Yoshi," the woman who entered said, "I understand you had requested Kuni assistance." "Indeed, Kuni-san," Kasumi said. She explained the issue she had with the child and the reason why she wanted a Kuni to look at the child, namely to check for taint. "I understand, Tsuruchi-san," the Kuni said, "give me five minutes to collect some things I might need." "Of course, Kuni-san," Kasumi said, pleased witht he quick response. She knew the Kuni would help, as they didn't take any chances where taint was considered.
Twenty minutes later they were at the Emerald magistrate post. Kasumi had the wet nurse bring the child, which was awake at the moment and started to laugh when he saw the Kuni's face paint. Yoshi did it the easy way, by taking out one of her scrolls and simply casting the spell Kasumi knew was called jade strike, something all Kuni learned. The child laughed again and tried to catch the green spots with his hand. "As far as I can tell, the child is not tainted," Yoshi said, "or at least, not so that it reacts with the earth kami." "I didn't think so, Kuni-san," Kasumi said, "but the circumstances surrounding the child made that I felt it better to check." "Of course, Tsuruchi-san," the Kuni said, "no problem with me. If by making a quick call on the earth kami I can reassure you, I'm more than willing to make that call."
The wet nurse brought the child away while Kasumi thanked the Kuni. When she was gone, Kasumi went back to her assistants to check up on the ongoing cases.

After he did some research Hiraku realized that he would not be able to find information about the child without either some information about the monks and the area around the monastery or without great luck. And since every visit to realms where spirits dwell was as dangerous as it was amazing and enlightening, he knew that it would be better to wait, especially since he already found a source of the information he needed. He sent one of the servants from the embassy to the Emerald magistrate post, with a message to the investigator that visited him. Any further plans he had were however interrupted, since a message arrived, one that asked for him presence, as someone that would be helpful in dealing with violent spirits. As this matter was one that he could help with easier than with the child, and one that was more urgent, he began preparing for the travel. The message for tsuruchi kasumi contains these words: "Tsuruchi-san Regarding the matter that requires my help, I have found a different source of information, that will make my investigation easier. At the same time, gathering information from that source will take some time, so I politely ask you for patience"

Kasumi had just received a message from Satomi when the message from Kitsu Hiraku arrived. Now the child was declared free of taint by the Kuni, they had time. With a wet nurse to feed and take care of the child, they could do things thoroughly to make sure they didn't make any mistakes. She requested some paper and wrote a quick message to the Kitsu Shugenja.
Kitsu-san,
There is no need to apologize, as you have said to me that these things will take some time. I've requested assistance from the Kuni and they didn't see any problems, so we have this time. In fact, I will have to go out of town for some time myself for the coming days. Should you need anything, or have any results, you can contact my assistant Kakita Mitsuko. She is aware of all the particularities of the case and she knows where I am should my presence be necessary.
Yours Sincerely,
Tsuruchi Kasumi Emerald Magistrate

Getting back to Kyuden Seppun, she had talked to her assistants and now she was on her way to the archives. But she first went past the Miya, where she managed to speak with the second in command of this post, a senior herald due to the prestige of the post. She explained the issue and he promised that he would ask his heralds to ask around. Between the Miya heralds and the emerald magistrates they should be able to find out what was going on.

After coming back from the Dawn Tower, Kasumi spent some time to get up to speed on the different investigations. "For the mystery child," one of her assistants said, "we've had some answers come in. It appears that there are seven children missing in the great clans. Two Crane, one Lion, one Phoenix, one Scorpion, one Mantis and one Dragon. All of those clans will sent a representative to discuss matters. We haven't had information from the Crab, but they are the longest away from here."
Great, more politics, Kasumi thought as she looked at his notes to see which families were involved. All seven were from different families. Doji, great, political family. That will be nice. Next, Asahina, a child of the family Daimyo. Even better. Bayushi, another political family. Matsu, less political, but it might be great fun if they sent a Matsu delegation. Miromoto, don't know much about them, but the child is the son of the daimyo's Hatamoto. So another touchy one. Next... Isawa. If it's a shugenja it will be interesting. And Yoritomo.
"I'll have to check with Kitsu Hiraku-san on how far he is with his preparations," she said, "sent him a message, will you." "Hai, sama," the assistant said. Kasumi nodded, as she wanted this out of the way as quickly as possible. She knew he had been at the Dawn Tower, but she also assumed he had given instructions before he left, just as she had done. And if he could give a family name before all the representatives arrived, she would have a much easier way of dealing with them.

"I won't." Satomi said, looking directly at her "tutor" Paneki. "Enough of magistracy for me. This is not and will never be my best feature." After being ordered to take some assistants and attend a meeting about missing children, requested by Tsuruchi Kasumi, Satomi felt she had had enough of the silly pranks her sempai or whatever she was meant to think of the Bayushi man in front of her, was playing on her, whenever the Emerald magistrates were involved.
The Imperial shireikan and favorite among the Sunetra's advisors narrowed his eyes:
"Ohhh you will. Our Mistress told you I was the responsible to teach you the Scorpion way, and I'm doing it. And besides…You know the Tsuruchi, she knows you… All you need to do is to listen what she has to say… And maybe to comprehend that, my dear, you are not a big mouthed Crab anymore. " I know what you want, you slippery koi. You mean to use me as spokeperson to the law enforcers, so the first mistake I commit, you get my head off without being washed in my blood. You are jealous because our champion approved some of my suggestions, instead of yours... But… I know what you want the most, "my dear"… Do it again and you'll see how I put someone else in the Empress nuptial bed…
It didn't escape to Satomi's attention that Paneki was trying to lobby himself as the Scorpion candidate to Empress Consort… And their champion seemed quite undecided about having or not a Scorpion in the position.
You know best, Paneki-san… We can use my worst assets in the benefit of our clan, as you advise so well. I must learn something from it.
You will, Satomi-san. Humility. Was his response.
"Are you sure is not time to become a monk, oh wise Paneki-san?"
"Some duties are not yet accomplished, Satomi-san. But one day I will, and the Fortunes permitting, I'd like to spend the rest of my days in the monastery your father lives… " Motherf… ! he knew where Yojiro, the man was said to be her true father, was. She had been forbidden to try talking to him by the Scorpion Champion, though it seemed to her it was either a whim or a test, or both. Now this masked peacock was teasing her…
"Very well, Paneki-san… Let's listen about missing children and whatnot. "
That's how she ended attending the call Tsuruchi Kasumi made to some great clans, including the Scorpion.
OOC: Giving peple some time to gather, I guess.

'Kaigen-san-
Your objections are duly noted, and found wanting. Your journey north can wait, and as you are already involved, it is not as if you cannot give this matter another day or two. It spares the Phoenix sending anyone else.'
Kaigen crumpled the letter up and chucked it down the Legion's latrine.
Fantastic. Here we go again.

Delivering her chop to announce her arrival, Satomi (and her two assistants) Satomi just wished it was a brief meeting. Fortunately, it was Tsuruchi Kasumi calling, and one thing she knew about the woman: she was pratical regarding everything.

Kasumi had requested the use of one of the larger meeting rooms, as she expected people to bring some assistants. She put on one of her best kimono for this and then she went to welcome everybody. She recognised Satomi, who was probably sent because they had worked together, and Kaigen, also for the same reason. The Yoritomo she didn't know personally, but she knew of his reputation, as he was personal assistant of the ambassador at the imperial court. She didn't know any of the others but she had to assume they would also be competent courtiers.
"Greetings to all of you," she said when everybody was served tea and some light snacks, "as you know, me and Shiba-san..." she pointed to Kaigen. "... have found a child in the Lion lands and some bandits who wanted this child dead. All of you have in their clans children gone missing, which is why you are here. I have contacted a Kitsu Shugenja to see if he could determine the childs ancestry, but until these enquiries bear fruit, I'm also relying on mundane means to determine who the child is. Therefore I would like to request from all of you some characteristics, striking features like birth marks, or any other things you know about the missing children in your clan to determine if we can find out who this child is. For those of you who want to, you can have a look at the child later."

Kaigen spoke in an utterly neutral tone.
"Based upon my own observations, I am reasonably certain that the child is not the missing Isawa. The half-moon birthmark is not something I recall from our time on the road."
Although I will grant that the thought of carrying that shrieking nightmare north with me might have compelled me to lie if I had to.
