I'm sure you will probably do it like this, but just in case: I think it's best if we make one thread for each test, so they can stay separate and easier to find back. I'll also create an extra thread for the political stuff I plan on doing during this time.
Which reminds me: Kasumi will try to talk to Hachi (which should not be much of a problem). Will the storyteller play that part, or can I do so myself?

Yes, that's part of the plan (separate threads) for the tests and the social stuff happening inside the castle in the main thread, please, unless you think it's going to be too long or too private. If you are going to perform your political stuff in other place besides the castle, then you are free to open new threads in Ryoko Owari-Scorpion lands. And yes, I can do Hachi's part as Storyteller, just tag me ( Bayushi Satomi) so i can be alerted when I am to post as Storyteller. Edit: After thinking better, I propose separated threads per day and not per test. I think the transitions between days will become confuse if we go for the idea of a thread per test (if you guys wish to use the nights to do something- political/social stuff etc). Also, some tests will have only 6 posts or so (one for the Storyteller opening and 5 the rest for the contestants).

I have another question concerning the armed combat. Will this happen with replica weapons (bokken) to avoid fatalities, or are we going in with real weapons?

Real weapons provided by the Judges (but differently from the Emerald Championship tournament, the contenders will choose their weapons of preference).

OK, thanks.
PS: in the emerald championship (from what I've read in 3rd edition roleplay books) you have three combat rounds (the candidate one-on-one vs another samoerai, mostly Seppun guards) -katana -weapon of candidate's choice (but Mantis are 'encouraged' not to select peasant weapons and Unicorn the same for gajin weapons) -weapon of judge's choice

Yep, those are the rules for the Emerald Championship. The Amethyst Championship doesn't have specific rules, so I created rules that could apply to our setting and players. Here, if a player decides to use a ceramic pot to fight his opponents, that's ok. The Amethyst Crown is a gaijin nemuranai, after all. And the Ruby Champion is a Unicorn.

That Zen-master trait came as a bit of a shock I thought I would win the poetry one with more difference (or any difference).
Question: as Hiraku is an NPC, how will it be decided in the combat parts which team he and his group will attack? Random?

Yes this is a good one and nobody picked it before me (in this case I'd choose other, just for the sake of variety)... I was surprised, in fact, that no one did it. Yep, dice will decide Hiraku's attacks if he doesn't retreat from the tournament for being "sick", that's it).
Don't worry, it's unlikely anyone beats your score in duel. <.<

Unless I have kenjutsu. And I looked at zen-master but didn't take it, because with a void of 1 it's not really all that useful to me. And nobody will beat your score with strategy, as that is what you do best.

It's a long way until strategy... I also doubt someone will be able to beat Te in unarmed combat, or Izo in Battle...

I rolled a 3. Just so I don't screw up again, what level spells would a rank 3 earth shugenja be able to use? And are there 2 bushi, one with fire 3 and the other air 2?

No, you have one bushi with fire 3 (to calculate offense) and air 2 (to calculate defense). As to earth shugenja, they normally have the following things: -purge taint (not really applicable here) -give extra armour, reduction and wounds -slow others -make people more resistant to a lot of effects (like other spells, fear, ...)
I have another question concerning this competition: -In the example given in this tread, I see that in the attacking team the bushi and shugenja NPCs also had a trait. Is this just a mistake in the example (as I don't see any traits in the group below) or are our traits also used by those NPCs? -Also, when in the battle the defending team wins, is the difference subtracted from the attacking team's health?

Kasumi is right, you have one bushi with fire 3 (to calculate offense) and air 2 (to calculate defense). For description, you can use the shugenja element to describe their spells (but the effects of their spell will be "pyrotechnic" only). What matters, however, is the raw element status, that will be added to your team total, as in the example. Responding Kasumi, yes, it was an error, they do not have special traits and you will use your traits for your character only. It happened because in a first moment I thought in adding traits to them, but then I realized it would only make things a lot complicated. Finally, if the defending team wins, the attack will be annulled, that's all.
