The whole scene after Hachi's intervention developed before an astonished Satomi. She became mute while a real and cold feeling crossed her body, as the Scorpon Champion did her entrance. She was before some of the most important person in the Empire, being judged by being born Bayushi… As if was a sort of curse.
Is that so? I'm not a woman of words, but I know that every word has a seed in it; once planted in the right "soil", it'll grow strong.
You Jiyuna-san, and the Asako daimyo, destroyed the ties I had with the clan that "fostered" me when I was a child. However… One should know when to shut up the mouth, and the other, when to stop looking for enemies where there's none. If it wasn't a Crab talking, few non-Crab would show such committment to her words as Satomi.
She took a deep breath, and couldn't avoid a tear to cross her face.
I was adopted into the Kaiu when my mother returned to her former clan. She was judged a criminal, a corrupt Kaiu samurai, and was condemned to death. I worked twice, thrice as hard to deserve the place where I stand today… To honor the trust the Kaiu daimyo put in my loyalty to the Crab.
The rage grew into her,it was obvious because she grew pale and the vein in her neck twitched visibly, but she managed to control her tone.
For some into the Crab... It's worth nothing. Whether one does the goblins hunt or you're not worth to carry the Crab mon. Whether it was a veiled mention to Yasuki Hachi or not, it was up to the listeners to decide.
Satomi tore the embroidered Crab mon in her shoulder using her tanto. The act was, of course a symbolic one. It seems I, too… can swim. I accept what Sunetra-dono offers. I accept the embrace of my clan of birth.
Looking at everyone round her, as if looking for someone, Satomi said, this time turning again to the Kuni woman.
I'd deliver this mon to the Champion of your clan, Kuni-san, but it seems you have none right now.

For the second time that night, Odai was stunned. It took a lot to shock the man; he had tortured and killed men in many imaginable ways, associated with some of the worst scum the Empire had to offer, he had even fought on the Wall, but tonight, in this outrageous example of why the Crab should never hold full, open court, the Yasuki was shocked.
The arrival of the Bayushi daimyo without his prior knowledge was what finally broke his reverie, as he immediately began seething about who he would have to be punishing for a slip-up such as this. He was in the midst of writing a message when Sunetra made her offer, and Odai slowly looked to the Kaiu general, one whom he had come to call friend over these last few months. He knew before she spoke what her answer would be, considering all that had transpired tonight, and gave a slight sigh of regret. This is one he probably should have seen coming, but that was little consolation.
Something inside of him snapped, a part of him he normally kept buried breaking through his carefully crafted persona, and his voice came through cold, clear, and calm. "Enough." He took several steps towards the center of the storm that was rapidly brewing in the room, giving a nod and bow only to Hachi, his eyes shining bright with a fierce presence.
"Lord Hachi-dono, while I respect that there are still matters that need to be discussed this night, and that we have much work yet to do, I believe you called an end to this Court, yes? I would suggest that we move this discussion somewhere more private, with less potential for distraction, and allow our guests to get some rest after such a harrowing evening." He kept his voice calm and quiet, but it was clear what he thought of this public mockery that a supposed trial had become.
OOC: Air5 + Doji Ancestor + Yasuki Merchant + City Governor = 8. Essentially just trying to convince Hachi that we need to shut this down before it becomes any more of a Public Relations nightmare lol

Far too late, Chisato found his voice again, "Wait wait!I never said she was a spy. No, I don't believe that at all... All I was trying to say was that her parents were Scorpion." He looks to her and the scorpion champion, "See? Its all better now, she'll be a Bayushi where she belongs, and soon there will be a new crab clan champion."
He scratches his chin and thinks about it, "I'm not an expert on the history of law, but I -think- the emperor has appointed a clan champion in the past when no clear successor was available, or while the young came of age."

Noroko's voice is heard before she's seen, the petite Lion appearing from among the rest of the court attendees. "Asako-daimyo is correct." She fixes Chisato with a frosty look, before wiping it from her expression as she turns toward the Emerald Champion and Shogun, clearly putting the Phoenix out of her mind.
She bows, introducing herself succinctly before launching into the history, her voice clear and precise. "Ikoma Noroko, Ikoma Historian, -donos. In 668, Emperor Hantei XX, the Son of Heaven, named Akodo Kenburo, an adopted Akodo who was currently serving as Emerald Champion, the Lion Champion in the absence of any clear successor to the position. Kenburo held the position until his death in 680, and was followed by a true Akodo heir. So there is precedent for such a decision." She closes her mouth and takes a near-silent step back, having delivered her piece.

Trust an Ikoma to come with some historical precedent, Kasumi thought as she went to the Emerald champion. At least this court had not been dull and she wondering if one chapter would be enough and if it wasn't better to write an entire book about this case. Especially the fact that Satomi had accepted the Bayushi name was something she hadn't expected, but then she didn't know the woman. This would have repercussions which would be felt in the empire for a long time. And the Scorpion were gaining a good general.
"Mylord," she said softly to Hachi, "I think it's best to follow Yasuki Odai-sama's suggestion. It might be best to end this before it erupts in violence."

Post by Kakita Kanehitsu on May 7, 2014 18:04:35 GMT
Kanehitsu looked over his shoulder at the remaining crowd in the room. All eyes were fixated on the little clutch of people in the center of the room. It would be difficult for the Emerald Champion to make any decisions at all with this tumult. As for himself, Kanehitsu was sure that any publicly made decisions right now would appear overtly affected by the many people clamoring for his attention.
"My esteemed champion, it may be best to acquiesce to the wise advice of your faithful servants in this instance. It wouldn't do at all for word of this to get out without having a proper resolution to explain it all first. I would echo Yasuki-samas pleas to have all parties involved retire before any more is said. I know from experience that unfinished gossip can grow many heads."
OOC: Air 5 + Kakita Artisan + Famous Poet = 7. Trying to convince Hachi that continued discussion here would damage his reputation. We should move this elsewhere before anything else happens. Essentially trying to add to Odai's score.

The revelation that Satomi was going to join the Scorpion left Kousei literally open-mouthed. Those close to him could here him mutter "Figures. She was always too pretty to be a Crab." He grunted. "Guess I'll have to stop disliking Scorpion on general principle now."

Kaigen didn't slouch on his spear, but only because of his survival instincts... and because Matsu Yukari was in the room as well, and he'd developed an amused appreciation of her newfound respect for him since that whole mess in the "millet storage." In truth, for all of the severity of the actions going on around him, the nuances of Satomi's situation were largely lost on Kaigen.
Say what you like about the Crab, their court is at least.... engaging.
And insane.
A skilled general is hard to come by. Just the Scorpion's good fortune, I suppose.
Hm. Wonder if that dinner's still happening...
All the while, he cut a grave, impassive figure as he continued to stand guard.

As Hachi notices Odai's and Kanehitsu's advances he nods and states:
"My lords and ladies of the Empire, in the face of justice and without further ado, I proclaim that this court is now brought to an end! Let us all ponder the repercussions of future unjust advances in the face of what we all respect in Rokugan. An honorable and legitimate life." and with these words he raised his hand.
Courtiers and dignitaries arose as Hachi himself escorted a "silenced" lady Hoketuhime outside of the chamber.

She would narrow eyes to the awkward comment of the Asako daimyo, or for the unnecessary explanation of the Ikoma woman, an inconvenient lurker in the situation. However, when the Lion was speaking, Satomi looked into Kuon's eyes for the first time. He knows what she meant. The Crab Championship and the Hida family, in fact, had an underage heir. Depending on the events unfolding around the "run for the Crab Championship" that, everyone knew, would ensue, Kuon could still have her personal support… or an enemy. He was the Shogun, but she was Satomi. It took the briefest of the moments, though. Hachi spoke; she bowed as everyone else, and joined Sunetra's company with another respectful bow. She wasn't a Crab rikugunshokan anymore.

Chisato, for all his efforts to try to stay, was spirited out of the room quickly by his retinue. He cast many glances over his shoulder as he went back to Satomi and Noroko.
"None of this had to happen." His lips giving voice to his thoughts on the surely mentally insane Hida Kuon.

Kanehitsu just happened to be within earshot of the Asako daimyo as he hand his students were packing up to leave. He drifted by and seemed to be looking over at another statue.
"It's true. In fact, if Satomi-sama had not been such a Crab she could still be a Crab. It's sad really."
And then he drifted back to his flock of overly excited youth.
*** Later that evening a note made its way to Odai's chambers
"Yasuki-sama, i apologize for the breakdown in our conversation earlier. Quite an evening indeed. I had no idea that my Yasuki hosts would have such a penchant for the dramatic. In any event, please find enclosed your bottle of sake. It is far too nice a gift to be enjoyed in the wake of such excitement. I shall have to wait for another time when I am more calm before accepting it."

Truly, he did not expect to receive the support of the Crane, though he reflected that did indeed sometimes pay to play the game, and he gave Kanehitsu a slight nod of thanks as Hachi dismissed the rest of the Court. As much as he disliked them, he found himself with more and more support from them of late, often at unexpected times, and this gave Odai pause.
He approached Sunetra and Satomi, playing the dutiful governor and giving the Scorpion Champion due acknowledgment now that he felt he could turn away without another political crisis developing. He made sure that the proper accommodations were prepared for the unexpected Scorpion delegation before turning to his former Clan mate, a smile on his face though there was a sadness behind his eyes, a regret that he normally would never show.
"Bayushi Satomi-san," he said, the name coming naturally though there was the slightest of hesitations. "I wish you nothing but good fortune in your new life. I hope you know that despite all that has transpired this evening, you will always be welcome in my holdings, as a friend."
Giving them both one last bow, he moved on, making the preparations to begin damage control in the wake of the political nightmare that had just put his Clan in a position, and yet he still reflected that despite it all, tonight could have gone far, far worse.

Te finally awakens to an empty courtroom. Looking around sleepily he mutters to himself "I knew I shouldn't have stayed awake all night doing katas". He slowly rises from his small chair, still not trusting it to hold him. "Still, nothing too exciting must have happened if I slept through it". Te left the quiet room to pack his meager belongings and find his boss, maybe Little Brother would have a job lined up.
