The Emerald champion received Kasumi's message and wondered what she could wish to talk with him in the middle of the Tournament. A reasonable person should be occupied on preparing for the tests, etc. Of course, "losing" her valuable help during 5 months, (as losing Izo) preoccupied him a bit, but she managed to coordinate her team remotely, doing a good job given the circumstances.
Hachi wondered what she was about to drop in his lap. Probably bad news about kolat. She was always so proper and incorruptible that it couldn't be another thing but work. That's why he choose her to be chief magistrate on kolat matters. If not by her hurry in leave Yasuki Yashiki without investigating better for herself when things were fresh after Kaneka's marriage... But he couldn't blame her, talented as Takai-sensei had told him, but still a bit fresh. The one to be blamed was himself...
He had been busy attending the Empress requests, sometimes even trying to be reasonable with her...
A strange thing occured with Tsudao after the Winter Court. Sometimes Hachi mused and used to think the catalyst moment was Sahai's visit to the Empress.
And the subsequent moment when she was showed she was overreacting on rushing to a new war against Shadowlands with the Empire half destroyed by all sort of disasters and wars.
She in fact, reacted as a sullen children, her position as general was questioned and she was remained she was to be "protected" and "meant to rule", not to act on her militaristic nature alone. For that she had the Shogun. Her reaction to court politics sometimes was evasive and she clearly was taking her time to punish the ones who didn't support her during the Four Winds Era, as she did to Otomo Hotekuhime recently.
The subsequent months had been living hell for the Imperials. With Imperial finances lowering dangerously, and a forecast of bad times ahead after excessive floods in the Spring and Summer... The taxes in the autumn were disappointing, to say the least, and the Magistrates often reported problems with desperate villagers rioting against the tax collectors this year. Apparently, even the hunt to Kolat and dismantling their commercial networks had its price on finances. Some merchants were Kolat themselves, and goods and routes stopped to flow properly, raising the prices. Only time could fix this.
While people liked to think the Emerald Champion was only a sort of playboy with a romantic position, he was aware of those details and his work with the Imperial Champion and the Imperial Chosen was serious and deep.
When Kasumi entered the room the Unicorn so gently provided so he could receive her, replied her cumpliment.
Not a problem, Kasumi-san. Congratulations for the birth of your second boy. He was informed earlier by his assistants about the gender of the baby. Not that he wouldn't like to know such things by heart, but it was virtually impossible.
I believe you are here to deliver alarming news, alarming enough to distract you from the tournament tests tomorrow... he frowned.
