"Are you sure that this is absolutely necessary?"
Asako Chisato was a mess. Or he felt like one anyway, on the outside the new daimyo of the Asako family looked simply marvelous. Or so the retainers Chisato had never known before kept saying. As if that was supposed to make him feel better.
"Hai, Asako sama, it is important that your new subjects have a chance to great you. There is no better format then an open court!"
That was the voice of Chisato's karo, also new to the position. Chisato sighed, resigned to his fate. You see a mere week ago, Chisato had presented evidence about an error in the lineage of the Asako daimyo. The evidence indicated that the line should pass through his family. He went to the elemental council and the soul of shiba himself to ask permission to have his name stripped so that this error not create a conflict.
But thats not what happened. Instead they gave him the job. They must be stark raving mad.
"I have no interest in meeting anyone! I met enough people already, I'm perfectly happy ju-"
"Oh, but Asako sama, the guests have already arrived, it would be dreadfully rude to send them home when you invited them."
"I invited them?"
"Yes, Asako sama, I sent out the invitations once you approved my list with your chop."
"I did? oh." He sighed again, then sneezed. He quickly grabbed a bit of cloth to clean himself up. Wondering if he shouldn't have made a stronger show of making his old friend Doji Mimiko to be his Karo. But no, the Phoenix ruling families insisted the karo be from the phoenix clan.
"I will anounce your arrival, then you will take a seat and greet and accept all of your visitors." Without another word, the karo had departed and opened a sliding door to the main court, standing on a dais which had a stool out and a set of tea next to it. On the floor were finger food provisions and space for various guests.
"Now announcing, the Honorable Daimyo of the Asako, Chisato sama. First of his name, first open court. Bring your matters to him in an orderly manner." The Karo turned and bowed to the door, and the audience does the same. Chisato nearly trips after hesitating to enter the floor. Whispering greets him as he makes his way to the small stool. He takes a seat.
"Uh, hello everyone."
The Karo steps up first, and bows deeply before Chisato, "As your first matter of court, I hearby swear my fealty to you my lord for now until my death, Asako sama."
What followed next was a chain of various lordlings and vassals, all finalizing their fealty to him. He mostly just tried not to make a fool of him self. He took a deep breath and took a soothing sip of tea. He had been at this for nearly an hour now. He looked to his Karo wondering what would happen next, then the Karo repeated for the umpteenth time, "Who would like to greet my lord or bring a matter before this court?"
