OOC: Closed thread for Satomi and Moeru Date: Somewhere between Winter Court Day 8 and its end. (to be edited)
-- "I don't like you, Satomi." O-Ushi was by her side, the lady of the Crab, her smart eyes darting the Kaiu's face and reactions; they were so close that Satomi could observe the wrinkles around the Daimyo's eyes and mouth. Her tone was a mix of sneer and resignation, so typical of the Bully.
Satomi, of course, blinked, confused and humiliated by the words of her Lady.
"I... Humbly accept your wisdom about my poor self, my daimyo." "Ha, really?" Satomi looked at her confused. The Crab armies were spread in the valley, while Kurohito's reinforcements were quickly surrounding them. What at first seemed to her clan a massive victory, suddenly proved to be a great estrategic mistake.
"You advised against this attack... Yet, shireikan... We didn't listen to you." Satomi went speechless. Anyway, she knew keeping her thoughts to herself was the better thing right now. A sense of urgency, agony, filled her. Being in this calm and senseless conversation in the middle of a battle they were losing... that was crazy! They should retreat, but time was of essence, and...!
"Listen, Kaiu." O-Uchi's warm hand grabbed the younger woman's wrist, suddenly. Satomi turned her attention to the elder Crab once again. "I am buying time for you... again. Make him listen... listen to you..." "What? What are you talking about... O-Uchi-dono?" "Everybody's dead Satomi... But the Hida... can't fail, nor the Kaiu can fall..." Satomi heard a overcoming battle roar, and when she looked back, all the Shadowlands armies were advancing over the Wall, like a giant tainted swarm able to lick and devour the massive building as a sentient animal... Climbing over one another, reaching the battlements... goblings, Losts, ogres and undeads... She cried a battle call, but her army vanished in the memory of years passed, and she was, alone, over the ruins of what once was The Wall.
She wandered, looking for someone. Empty towers, abandoned and dusty barracks, forges... everything was gone. Everyone.
"But for one... the last Hida. In your belly." A familiar and comforting voice made itself heard, amidst this depressing wreckage. The fresh smell of tea and the subtle mirth this voice carried with, made it recognizable.
"Tea?"
--
Satomi opened her eyes, her heartbeats resounding in her ears. She was in her bed, in the Winter court. When was the last time she cried?

A pair of days ago, during a morning stroll through the court, a Mantis servant discreetly approached to the Crab, and delivered to Yasuki Nozomi a message, exchanging a word or two with the belle during this process. While Satomi's court companion was busy with this activity, a Scorpion gentleman passed by the group, and bowed to Satomi.
"General Kaiu-sama..." His mask was mempo-like, black, but when their eyes met, she recognized her father.
He was not a Bayushi anymore (at least officialy), nor a Kaiu: he was a criminal and a ronin. considered disappeared years ago and with a high price for his head in the bounty hunters list. Yet, he was in the Winter Court, passing as a venerable Scorpion. He had the guts, and the audacity, but deep in her heart, she wished him to go away soon, though she wasn't entirely sure whether his former clan would take offense in it or not.
General, forgive my insolence, but I believe it's yours. And murmured: I'm waiting you in the city.
The "Scorpion" handed her a netsuke, and once said this, he disappeared.
Satomi was speechless.
-- Now, she wasn't able to find the netsuke.

Having lost the message, Satomi had a hard time trying to find where Keitaro was in the city. A loyal servant, eager to please, and a budget, led to the Mantis servants, that appointed to places where Moshi Yoru used to visit... and this afternoon, Satomi declined the honor of being the judge of a competition of go, and covered herself against the cold, heading to the city as discreetly s possible. There, she looked for a ramen shop, serving soldiers off duty. She pulled the conical jingasa to better cover her features, and once in, dropped a bu in the hands of who she identified as a dealer of some specie: The ronin "Teishu".
Minutes later, Satomi was introduced to a private room poorly decorated and smelling of smoked food, a bowl of soba was served by a servant girl with greasy hair. That was, indeed, the sort of place she never expected to see her father into; it made her heart tight. She knew everything was wrong, from the beginning. She kept herself in alert, while waited for him. It took no long. The door slid and Keitaro entered, dropping the cape. The ronin used a faded gray silk scarf around the lower part of his face, and Satomi was sure he never believed himself a Kaiu in his entire life. Takai was tied in his back, apparently sleeping. What? Is Takai... here? she murmured, in shock. Yes Sato-chan. Keitaro carefully extricated himself from his little burden and handed the toddler to her; the little boy stirred a little, in his sleep. Satomi reached the boy, burying her face in the hair of the toddler, sniffing and trying to record this smell in her memory. As I mentioned in my first message… the one your brother delivered… I can't have Takai with me anymore. It's becoming too risky, Satomi. For his life, I mean.
She raised the face to him, feeling a shadow of panic coming. Anyway, she remained with her son in her arms. What to do now?
Don't look at me this way. You are a widow. Your way is free.
My way… is free?
Well… Maybe not. But…Takai is not only your son. He has a father. His father is responsible for him, just like you.
I told you I ne…
You will tell him. And this is the best time for it. If you don’t do it now, what if Takai's father dies without legitimizing his first son?
Legitimizing?... It's a bit too much, I guess…
Ah, and why not? Kaneka was legitimized. Toturi himself had a bastard legitimized under his name. He has now a place of honor in the Empire, and for an instant… He had all the chances of being Toturi II… If the Emperor can do it, why not a subject? How can it be a dishonor?
Father…! Kaneka's mother was dead. I am not.
Keitaro was eating the soup, now without the mask. He stared at his daughter for an instant. He was an elder version of Moshi Yoru, the only great difference was the color of their eyes. You have been walking with the wrong persons, Sato-chan. You think yourself so smart, and yet… If you got it once, why not twice?
Satomi laughed, but out of embarrassment. Indeed, she was very different from her parents…Or so she believed. Satomi. He stood from the cushion, and came to where she was, with the asleep baby. You asked me a favor… To take care of Takai while things were hard in The Wall. Now, the Towers were retaken; Toturi killed Daigotsu; and Kuon… is the Shogun.
I heard that you and your friend Yasuki made it happen. Congratulations, Satomi! You are the real Lady Crab on the top of the Kaiu Kabe, and in court as well. Think about it. Retake your place. By the way… Is the Yasuki your lover?
Satomi didn't feel comfortable to speak. She just shook her head. Keitaro just dismissed his next sentence with a wave of hand, resuming his point, while grabbing his cape again: You need to tell him. Now. The tall man returned to next his daughter and grandson, caressed the asleep boy's face for an instant. Then, Keitaro raised the look to his daughter: Sato…I love you. I'm doing it for your own good.
A long silence came over the room, as he was giving her time to think. After a while, she nodded. The ronin left, but couldn't help to look back to the little boy in Satomi's arms, from the door. For a long time after his departure, Satomi was still staring at the toddler in her arms, half marveled at having him with her again and… afraid of what the future would bring to both.

He reacted exactly as she thought he would. A variety of emotions from the anger, doubt, passing through regret, accusations, confusion to happiness and fear; but seeing Takai was enough to change most of it. Satomi saw a spark of pride, a spark of true care, in Kuon's eyes for his firstborn. Increased highly when he took the boy in his arms.
Then, Kuon... dono?
He grunted something, but it wasn't enough for her:
I'm not saying what you have to do, Kuon-dono. Say a word and you... will never see or hear about Takai again.
Looking at him, she could still admire him as a leader, but she realized that he made a good job in crushing her heart with a hammer. She felt nothing for him as man, now, just a slight regret for their past affair.
Well well, seems Benten turned her face off when I was born.
Also, her father's idea seemed now, indecent and almost unpleasant. The stomach for deliberately seducing someone was a Scorpion's talent she hadn't in her blood.
The Shogun was observing how Takai was in his lap and played with the ornaments of his armor, delighted. Obviously, the child was marveled on how two complete strangers were able to pamper him a lot. He tried to establish a communication with the biggest man he ever saw in his life, using a mix of real words and baby babblings..
Big...samo...rai...
Kuon's reaction to it almost made Satomi to laugh. And a bit jealous too. When Takai noticed that Keitaro, his reference, just disappeared, she had a hard time dealing with his desperate sobbings, till the servant Taki joined her to take care of the boy.
Don't be stupid, Satomi. Hida Kuon said. He's my son.
When you will tell it to the rest of the world? She was direct and insolent. Do you need to ask Reiha?
His cold gaze said she was swimming in dangerous waters now.
No. Whatever my decision is... She has none to do with that.
Absolutely. Then? Time is of essence. It's risking our son's life.
Kuon curled the index finger around the wrist of Takai, making the boy to laugh, then to feel bothered by it, and force his little fingers of the right hand to remove it, with great effort, grunts, and no success. Takai could be a big boy for his age, but he was still a little toddler facing Hida Kuon.
What is not threatening his life now?
Satomi sighed, and seated by their side.
Right. Listen, Kuon... I had a dream...
In the next day, a message of Satomi arrived to Moeru. It wasn't an unusual thing, as many Dragons already knew the Crab General and Togashi Moeru had a lot of meetings and business during the Winter Court. She was proposing, however, to take him out of the castle for some hours, in order to share a meal with her and some Crab friends. Something in the text of the message could sound quite displaced though. But at the appointed time, the Kaiu General was there to take Moeru and his aide to a ride out of the castle.

Moeru, relieved to have a day free of extraneous court appearances, Tsukai, treaties, appropriations meetings, and the like, relaxed in the foyer of the Dragon's quarters, enjoying Tea and Noodles, listening to a musician he had hired to entertain the Dragon today. With Winter Court grinding to it's inevitable conclusion, the Dragon were in preparing to leave for Dragon Lands in the coming days. It had been a mixed bag at court. With a Kitsuki Courtier found to be a Maho user, and Moeru and his new allies efforts to thwart a bloodspeaker cell, and the alliances themselves taking most of his time, Moeru had found little time to enjoy some of the "niceties" of court. One of those, were the musicians.
This musician may not have had the flare, or talent of the Kimiko-san he met on his first day at court, she was nonetheless an accomplished musician. The Tamori Shugenja, the remaining Kitsuki retinue, and the Mirumoto Bushi all lounged for a time enjoying her music.
Shinko sat as close to Moeru as she could, without drawing too much suspicion from the rest of the group. The monring passed, and Lunch time came.
As they were preparing for Lunch, a Crab messenger arrived at their chambers. Satomi was asking for Moeru to join her for an afternoon trip. The request seemed... more frazzled than he was used to hearing from the Stoic Kaiu. But, with all that Satomi had endured through this winter court, it wasn't troubling. Still though, the Monk pondered what would make Satomi request a trip like this from the monk.
Moeru bowed to the servant. "I will be ready, and waiting."
The Messenger bowed, and left. Shinko clasped Moeru's arm, and led him to his room. He spoke little of his concerns about the message as they prepared, but it gnawed at the back of his mind, a curious riddle, from someone who wasn't known for a love of riddles.
Moeru clutched Shinko's hand, and kissed it. "I still owe you a day." he said with a grin. She giggled under her breath, and helped him into a padded vest. It left his tattooed arms exposed, but would provide enough warmth.
Shinko dressed in the best attire she had. It was something knew that she had purchased in the village on her day trip. It wasn't above her station, but it was a fine enough outfit to make people curious.
When Satomi arrived, Moeru bowed. "Good afternoon Satomi-san. I hope that you are well."

The general was being shadowed by her new yojimbo, Hida Arata, who was briefly introduced as trained in the Elite Guard. Even not seeing, Moeru could sense Arata was able to shadow even the tall Kaiu woman, and to occupy a lot of space for himself.
Satomi glanced to the elegant clothes of Moeru's aide, assuming it was a gift of an admirer or such... This information was packed in a compartment of her mind, for now.
Good afternoon, Moeru-san. I hope that sharing your company makes my day as radiant as your clanners are having with you... I almost feel ashamed to force you to leave with me today...
Her tone carried a hint of melancholy, and when they left the castle, she said they would be visiting a manor across the river, lent by the local daimyo to some dignitaries of the Crab.
I promise there'll be tea waiting for us, my friend.
Generally speaking, Satomi was anxious and it was clearly noticed in her aura. Also, she was sad, and probably Moeru hadn't sense the Crab woman this way before.
The place possessed the calm of the solid and ancient buildings in the top of a hill, but it was well guarded. Obviously a great estate of some noble Akodo or else.
Is he already here, gunso-san? she asked, as they dismounted.
Yes, Kaiu-sama. Hida-dono is meditating at the shrine.
Med...? Well, when he's ready, tell him I'm here with Togashi-sama.
Satomi, Moeru and Shanko were directed to a room filled by the scent of the pines and cypresses around the house, and made comfortable by polite servants. It was silent and calm, and so big and sparsely decorated that any word spoken a bit harshly would sound inappropriately loud. Satomi served the tea, as a host. Fortunately, this one was made by someone else. After a moment savouring the tea and listening the wind blowing through the trees, she said:
Very well, my friend Moeru-san. I think I shall finally reveal why I insisted to have you here today... I trust you greatly. This is why you are here, in first place.

Moeru was even more curious now. Her tone, her aura, everything pointed to a state of mind that Moeru had not seen in his Crab Friend. Even at the loss of her husband, this was something... different. As she mentioned tea, Moeru grinned. Moeru's love for tea, was legendary.
When Satomi mentioned Hida-Dono... Moeru's ears perked up. The circumstances surrounding this afternoon were turning far more important than he had originally thought.
After she spoke, Moeru bowed to her. "Satomi-san, we have endured a great many things together. From the war, to the Tsukai, and many travels in between. You are a great friend, and one of my closest allies in all the land." He folded his arms across his vest. "Had I known the... weight of this meeting were so great, I fear I would have dressed more appropriately." Moeru bowed slightly. "You're carrying a heavy burden Kaiu-san. I hope my presence will keep it from breaking your shell."

Every of Moeru's bows was reciprocated by her most sincere bows as well.
I assure you, you are elegantly dressed to the occasion, as is your aide.Your words honor me, mainly because my feeling towards your person were reflected in your words. Your opinion about me, though, soon will be proven a misperception...
Choosing to not allow the Dragon to counter her affirmation, Satomi choose a direct path:
I have, Moeru-san, a little son. He's not of age to be taught in our dojo, as he was born in the month of Dragon, two springs ago. I'd like to know he's in safe hands while we rebuild The Wall, while.. his time has not yet come.
Her tone was cautious though.

Moeru's mouth drooped a little, shocked that someone he thought he knew so well harbored such a discreet secret. The suggestion in her words raced through his mind. When he realized he was only making the situation worse standing there with his mouth open, he rubbed his chin. "Forgive my expression Satomi-san, I... I had no idea." Moeru felt silly for seeming so shocked. "Tthe hardships faced by those of your clan, make it understandable why such a little one would be concealed. The horrors you face, could make a deathseeker run the other way." Moeru measured his words carefully. He didn't wish to insult someone anymore than his mouth agape expression already had.
"I understand that with the passing of your husband, it only compounds caring for the future of the Crab." Moeru seemed puzzled. "And Hida Kuon-dono, wishes you to place the child in the care of the dragon?" Moeru looked through the elements at her aura, trying to read anything he could from her aura.

The Kaiu woman was in a defensive mental state, as if expecting for a slap. Also, something seemed to puzzle and captures her attention. Maybe Shinko's reaction?
Yes, Hida-tono would like to have our son under your care. That was my idea, Moeru-san.
But he approves. After saying that, Satomi fought with her feelings of frustration, but kept an impassible carapace in the outside. Not that it would mind for Moeru.

Shinko stood, trying her best to not draw attention to her reaction towards what was an unbelievable scene unfold in front of her. A hidden child, son of the Crab Champion and another woman... She had always been taught that she was to be invisible in a room with Samurai, and she tried her best, but tears welled in her eyes, as she saw the pained expressions on Satomi's face, and the tone of her voice. She turned away, and put a hand to her face to try and stifle any sound that might escape as she wept.
Moeru groped for a chair. He had to sit down. our son. Those words hit him like a ton of bricks. He had thought that this was Shigekazu's child, and that Kuon was just attempting to curry favor.... No, this was more than that. This was a father looking to find solace and safety for his own.
Moeru nodded as he sat in the chair, his head hung low. "Forgive me Satomi-san. I have made assumptions that were not true." He sounded remorseful. "It would be an honor to provide for the child of such a friend." Moeru composed himself and stood again. "You have my word, your son will be cared for." Moeru's tone was reverent. "You son will be cared for as if he were our own. I cannot speak for the Kitsuki, or Mirumoto directly, but he will be given the opportunity to achieve his destiny in the house of Togashi, and I'm sure in speaking with Togashi Satsu-dono, that will apply to any family he would so choose in the Dragon."
Moeru grinned a little, hoping to break the tension a little. "And it would give you reason to visit the most beautiful land in Rokugan."

Satomi needed some minutes to speak again. It was as if some giant burden was taken from her shoulders. I always had curiosity to know how the lands on the far north are, Moeru-san. She said quietly, and sighed. I must admit, Moeru-san, I had little doubts about your response. Your heart is pure and you have little hurry in condemning... I am honored to have my son tutored by you and your clan. Kuon-dono also has you in high praise.
Pretending they were talking about a normal tutelage was far beyond her ability for hypocrisy, or at least, she thought it would cheapen Moeru's generosity. Satomi still would fight for what was her son's by right. But a general know the time to retreat. That was, indeed, her solace... or the best excuse she could have for herself. Please Moeru-san, enjoy the tea. I'll come back in a minute.
-- She leaned on the first column she found, far from the view of everyone, breathing heavily. She wouldn't cry, oh no. Takai would be well with the Dragon. He would be better than he never had been before. -- When she returned to the room they were, she was taking her son by the hand. A servant came behind her and the child, ready to help. Moeru couldn't see the boy, but probably could feel his curiosity towards the man in green with a blindfold. Moeru-san, this is Takai... While the expression "direct descendant of Hida-kami" wasn't spoken, it was implied in her shy, but prideful tone. It was something that could be evident for a person like Moeru.

Moeru took a cup of tea. He was nervous, at what would happen next. Would the Shogun emerge? Would someone else come? His leg started to bounce as he waited, his nerves were beginning to get the best of him. With Satomi out of the room, Shinko moved closer to him, and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"You are a noble man, Moeru-sama. Many would have chastised and ridiculed such a situation. A Scorpion would have even used it for political gain." She said softly, her voice sounding almost reverent.
Moeru's leg jitter calmed, and he huffed. "I know what it is like to be faced with a situation many would perceive as a failure. I saw how I was treated in light of failing my duty. Sometimes, our greatest achievements are born from our most vulnerable positions, Shinko-san, I could never dream of treating the honored General in a disingenuous manner." Moeru's voice was flat, and matter of fact. "Satomi has shown great trust, and honored me. To refuse would not dishonor her, but me."
She patted his shoulder, and moved closer to him. "Will the Dragon accept him? Will their not be gossip?" Her voice was worried.
Moeru shook his head no. "You will see, in the High House of Light, things are different than what you are accustomed to with the Kitsuki, Shinko-san. We have little use for the trappings of politics, and rumors. It is why Satsu-dono chose me to be his voice at court." Moeru filled his tea again. "When you toss a stone down a mountain, it gathers more stones. And by the time they reach the mountain's base, you'd never find your stone. We Togashi, view things like that. Cast it off, let it fall down the mountain. You'll soon find many things at the bottom of the mountain you realize you didn't need."
When Satomi entered the room, Moeru could see the aura of the young crab. There was no mistaking who he was, and what he was destined to become. Moeru sat down in the chair, he could feel the eyes of the boy taking him in. "Konichiwa Takai-san. You and I? We will have many adventures." Moeru grinned wide in the boy's direction. He patted the seat next to him. "Maybe one day, I'll teach you to breathe fire." Moeru chuckled, and "looked in Satomi's direction.
"Your son has greatness in him, No matter the path he takes, He will make his Ancestors... And his Parents, very proud." Moeru took a sip of tea, and placed the tea cup back on the table. "You honor me with such a place in your life Satomi-san, as does Kuon-dono. I do hope that your decision is rewarded with peace, and wisdom."

Your friendship brings me peace, Moeru-san. Knowing that Takai will be in the North, with you... I like to think we are making the better decision for Takai.
The boy was stimulated to seat by Moeru side, and remained quiet in his new place.
Please Moeru-san, if you think it...
Whatever Satomi was meaning to say, she was interrupted by the arrival of the Shogun. He entered alone, and was dressed simply.
After bowing to Moeru (as one who knows to owe a great favor), and being told by Satomi how the conversation evolved, he took some minutes talking directly with the Togashi Monk, about practical aspects of Takai's tutelage. His lack of passion in the subject could sound alarming for more emotional persons. He was, though, as polite and amicable as he could be all the time. Kuon then, excused himself and took the little Takai with him for a moment, leaving the the room.
Satomi knew this facet of Kuon's personality. He used to be quiet and cold when things were going bad in his mind and heart. But it could have caused a bad impression in Moeru, nevertheless.
I only can be glad, Moeru-san. She spoke after a moment, I was granted latitude to offer my family's advice and help with anything related with our area of expertise, Moeru-san. If it pleases Dragon, and can be arranged to be made after our most urgent duty to the Empress. Please, don't it refuse so quickly, is the only thing I ask. You may find use to this offer; if not today, tomorrow, maybe.

Moeru was pleased with the conversation with Kuon. It was refreshing for the monk to speak with someone about practicality practically. Of course the Shogun would have his ideas regarding his son's education, and growth into a man.
Moeru smiled at Satomi as she spoke. "I would never refuse you Satomi-san. That is not how friends behave. We can leave those pleasantries for court." His tone was uplifting. "I will personally arrange it with Satsu-dono, and when the Crab's urgent needs are met, I'm sure we can find something to put a Kaiu's mind to.
Moeru leaned back in the chair, looking like a man pleased and refreshed. "I do have but one request for you, Satomi-san." He held a hand out, asking her to sit. "Enjoy a cup of tea. Take a moment, breathe. Sometimes, life happens in the quiet lulls between the storm."
