After her breakfast and some meditation in the temple, Kasumi was wandering in the gardens. She would have to see where she would be assigned next now that the issue here was solved. At least, sort of solved. She was just walking and not really looking where she was going and she almost bumped into someone. Only her fast reflexes saved her. She recognised the Crane that had been there at the trial with a lot of extra people. She bowed for him, a bit lower than she normally would as excuse for almost walking against him. "Kakita-san," she said, "my apologies. Have you eaten rice today?"

Kanehitsu looked at the bowing samurai before him and bowed back politely.
"Good morning...Tsuruchi-san, yes? I think I remember you being at the trial last night. If I'm not mistaken you were the smartly dressed magistrate with the bow, yes? Inari has been very kind to me this morning. Can I help you with anything? You seem to be looking for something to do."

"I was just wandering around, clearing my head after all that happened yesterday," Kasumi said, "and we don't have gardens like this back home. But I don't mind some company, especially not from a Kakita. As you might know, my late mother, may her soul enjoy the blessings of Yomi, was a Kakita before she married my father. So we might be related, however distant."

Kanehitsu took out his fan and waved it at himself while he tried to think a little bit.
"You'll forgive me I hope, Tsuruchi-san, but many of my cousins have been married into many different clans and this overly full head of mine can't seem to recall the specific person to whom you refer. Who was your mother? I would be interested to know how we are connected."
OOC: When you talk about your mother I'm going to try and see if I know who she is. Fire 3 = just a 3, so maybe not too much.

"My mother was Tsuruchi Nahomi," Kasumi said, "and her father was Kakita Hachiro, who used to be a sensei at the Kakita academy, although he is retired for many years now."
OOC: I just made this up. Let's assume a minor sensei, one of many who deal with the first classes.

"Hmmm. I can't say as I've had the chance to meet with either of them. I wonder if you grandfather was maybe a sensei at the dueling academy. the two schools are connected but the sensei population doesn't overlap much. I can only imagine that he was an honorable man. And so too your mother then. I hope she rests peacefully with her ancestors."
Kanehitsu lapsed into a bit of a reverie looking over the gardens, leaving a small but awkward pause in the conversation. The flowers were still closed tightly against the cold of the morning but later today they would be very likely to open up to the brightness of spring. Before delving too deeply into thought, the Crane caught himself and dug into his kimono for his fan and then snapped it open, showing a different garden scene altogether.
"But in any event, Tsuruchi-san, you said you were clearing your head. From what Is aw you were the picture of a dutiful magistrate at the trial and your testimony was quite helpful. Is there perhaps more that you haven't told us all that weighs heavily on you?"
Kanehitsu playfully hid behind his fan as if preparing to be scandalized by the magistrate's response.

"It is just that this was my first case as magistrate," Kasumi said, "and you were there at the court session. There was the Kolat, maho, taint. It's quite a lot of things, as if every bad thing in the empire was somehow involved. At some moments it seemed that with each witness I questioned the case became more complicated, instead of getting solved. And it's also the audacity to try to assassinate someone at his own wedding, using a clan champion as sleeper agent. This is something unprecedented, at least as far as I know, and something we will have to guard against."
Probably not the scandals he was waiting for, but she had said everything she knew at the hearing. Sometimes in abbreviated form, for consistency, but she hadn't omitted anything important.

Kanehitsu came out from behind his fan a little disappointed but he oughtn't have expected much. After all, why would a magistrate conceal important information in the pursuit of justice? Kanehitsu couldn't help but smiled for a moment. Sincerity versus Honesty was always a thing he liked to lecture on in his classes.
"You say that we need to protect against something unprecedented. Do you expect there will be more wedding assassination attempts? Should I tell my cousins to make sure their matchmakers have guards assigned to them?"

"I don't think so," Kasumi said, "at least, not at the moment and not more than you normally do with yojimbo assignments. I will have to investigate further and of course, if I uncover something, I will let the people concerned know. And as good as those Kolat might be, they can't be everywhere."

Kanehitsu looked thoughtful.
"The thing about secret organizations, tsuruchi-san, is that they are very hard to pin down and so they might as well seem to be everywhere and nowhere at the same time. You may want to consider that in your investigations. I know that for my part I have always found the pervasiveness of rumors to be much more difficult to deal with than the seeming scarcity of truth. In any event, be careful, we wouldn't want to lose someone with good Crane blood to something as...inconvenient as Kolat rabble rousers."
"What are your plans int he immediate future? Will you hunt them down or let them distance themselves from the Yasuki before going after them again?"

"I'm not sure," Kasumi said, "I have some leads from the investigation here that I can follow, but I will also have to do some research in the archives of the Emerald magistrates, to get to know more and to see if there are other leads I can follow. So for me it will be Toshi Ranbo, I guess."

"That sounds like a wise decision," mused Kanehitsu. "Let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you."
Kanehitsu looke dup at the sun which was well into the sky now.
"I think for now though, i had best be getting off to other projects for the day. I ought to be heading back to the Kakita Academies sooner than later."
Kanehitsu bowed.
"It was good speaking with you, my good magistrate. I pray the blessings of the Sun upon you."

"Of course, Kakita-san," Kasumi said with a bow, "I wouldn't want to keep you from your duties." When he had gone, Kasumi lingered a bit in the garden before she went back to the castle. First she had to check with the staff of the Emerald Champion on where she was posted now and then she had to make arrangements to actually go there.
