Kuon leaned back, a slight shadow of a smile showing it that finally Chisato's words pleased him. He returned to his frank tone that one expects when talking with a Crab. But I stepped back from my position as Champion of the Clan when the Glorious Empress requested my services commanding the Imperial Legions. I assumed the Shogunate, and my spouse was made the Crab Champion. It sounded as a natural decision as our first son would be the next Champion of the Crab. But those plans were interrupted, as you know. He paused, Reiha's death was still too fresh in the memory of everyone. Do you think, as a genealogy specialist, that Takai's claim as the next Clan Champion is as valid as if I wasn't declined from my position as Champion in my clan? To be true, my advisors say that I should reclaim my former position, and the Clan will find good hatamoto to serve as my representative, while I serve my Empress as Shogun, and they'll find a good Hida daimyo from a good and traditional lineage next to my own. He rubbed his chin. I'm going to legitimize my son Takai as my firstborn, it's out of question. I was waiting a good opportunity to do so, but before it turns into an"ugly thing" into the mouths of the futile people in the court, I'll make what The Great Toturi did before me. Any legal impediment you can think of?

"The current Emerald Champion is the Yasuki Daimyo, and Ikoma Norko san mentioned that the Emerald Champion Akodo Kenburo was appointed to clan champion status by the emperor in court. This would indicate that carrying both duties is acceptable. Until I heard about Takai, I was going to make the recommendation to the Empress to appoint Hida Rohiteki san before things got out of hand. Perhaps she could lead while your son comes of age?
The uh, only setback would depend upon the mother... I think."

What the mother has to do with legitimizing my son? Was Kaneka-san's mother a setback for that to happen? No, so I can't see why I couldn't do the same. Perhaps it wasn't Kuon's intention to sound aggressive, but he did nevertheless.

"But... what will the records state? That there was no mother, only a father?"
He flips though his book quickly, "I... I don't think that has ever happened!"
Poor, poor Chisato.

Ahhh… I see… Kuon stood, and walked across the room, thoughtful. His half-Unicorn heritage became evident in moments like these. He walked like one of them. Takai's mother had many names in her life, being called "Hida" for some minutes, actually, before "dying" in front of my eyes. For a moment I thought I could see her raising our son, but she knew better. Takai is with the Dragon by her request, and will be there until "everything" _ and he made a wide arc with the arm, probably meaning the War against the Shadowlands and Sahai_ is over. Takai's mother's name is a thing for the future… When words can bring more honor than harm.

"Oh, Well then that would seem to be a wise decision-..." Chisato blinks a few times, silencing suddenly, but not out of fear, out of realization.
It was usually very easy to pull the wool over Chisato's eyes, but to try and hide the truth behind vague clues of family names? Chisato was an expert. He looks Kuon in the eye, and Kuon would know just from looking at him that Chisato had figured it out.
Chisato looks back, and then sneezes.

The Shogun ignored Chisato's sneeze, booming enthusiam at his acquiescence. Excellent! Knowing that the Asako daimyo was able to understand why a samurai doesn't reveal the name of a past affair, he completed. What really matter is that Takai is a Hida. He'll be raised as my son... My only son. And by the wishes of the Fortunes, he'll continue the lineage of my mother O-Ushi-sama, my grandfather Kisada-sama, and the ones before them. After a moment to savor the idea as something real, something that could be saved from the wreckage of his small family, Kuon reminded the day Satomi told him about her dream and now it made perfect sense. His love for Reiha was still greater after her death, and he was determined to honor his words about never remarry or love another woman after her. But his blood, the blood of Hida, would continue through Takai and his sons. I'm glad you agree it's the right thing to do. Maybe... You can help to make this action a bit less... The Shogun showed some difficult to find the right word, ah yes, shocking and uncomfortable to some people. The sort of people who like to dig in what is not their business, in the attempt to get advantage to themselves...And the ruin to others. You are an authority in lineages and people will listen to you.His request for a personal favor, even made in a blunt manner, lingered in the air waiting for a proper reply.

He nods and agrees with Kuon as he speaks, but his focus is on his book, as he begins to make a necessary edit that would uphold the accuracy of his life's work. Once he lists Bayushi Satomi as the mother he looks up at Kuon, "I will do all that I can to ensure Hida Takai san takes the position unopposed. The empress will help immensely. Would Hida Rohiteki san become regent of the clan then?"

Ignoring that Chisato was doing exactly the opposite the Shogun wished, Kuon nodded. That's something my clan will decide shortly. My cousin Rohiteki-sama (it seemed that he could never call her -san) is a wise person and never faltered to the Crab clan. Also, she was my mother's best and loyal friend, as my advisor as Champion… I'd appreciate it immensely that she'd assume the Hida daimyo's duties when I reclaim my position as Champion. Clearly assuming that this part of the conversation was finished, the Shogun changed his serious tone to a more casual one: Now, my friend Chisato-san, would you like to share a bottle of sake with me?

Now that was done, Chisato felt he could relax. So he closes his book after letting the ink dry, he smiles at Kuon, "I would not mind the pleasant distraction, Hida sama... though I usually drink tea, I uh... can make this exception."
