"I've been involved with the attempted murder of Yasuki Kaneka-sama and his wife in yasuki Yashiki," Kasumi said, knowing that the rumours about that one were all over the empire, "and now the murder of Lady Mai, bride to be of Sezaru-sama. Those cases are Political with capital P. I will of course do my duty, but I wouldn't mind some squirrels at the moment."

"I think then you have not met many squirrels. They are dreadfully dull creatures. Far too concerned with nuts" Torako's lips do not even twitch as she takes another sip of her tea
"Although I do agree politics is a reprehensible bore, it does rather give people something to do, so perhaps we should thank it for that. It is surely thanks to your actions though that we say attempted murder and not eventual murder. When you retire to a monastery in many years time you can be proud of your duty. Then I am sure you will have all the squirrels to talk to you could want."

Shot a steely glance at the Matsu as she spoke of nuts.. they both were if you asked him. Who the hell wanted to go to a monastery? Much better to die he thought.
"I would never let them put me in a monastery better to set of on an errand of impossible nature and fail then preach long life to others." his singular gravelly voice intoned
"If you bother to ask the Unicorn they make good eating." saying it in such a way one could interpret it as both monks and squirrels. Perhaps baiting someone? Who knew.
Better the Mantis to handle political affairs anyway. They had much more to gain and were of need of political favors given their comparable newness amongst the great clans. At least it came at a far less upheaval then when the Ri-Rin returned.

"I must confess I have had little cause to ever ask anything of a unicorn. But then, I am just a young girl and far too given to tradition. It is possible that I shall have to ask an Utaku how they get their horses so large one day."
Torako found she was rather enjoying the joking. Back home they said she had her father's humour, and as a Kuni he would joke about inappropriate things and laugh at the most grissily stories. Here outside of her clan she seemed to have found some people that were willing to laugh with her rather than shy away. Perhaps it was to be expected. Why not laugh when you might die tomorrow. Her father had taught her that, and though she did not serve on the wall, in Rokugan a word could cut as deep as a sword.
"I do not think that I will ask them about their recipes though. As dull as I find the creatures, they are sometimes all the company I have, and I would hate for them to think that I am going to eat them"
Torako too, did not clarify if she were talking about squirrels or monks

"It would serve a woman of such beauty and intelligence to spend some time with the Utaku as they would appreciate the value of Matsu tradition." smirking briefly with the good side of his face.
"I have to admit I rarely am graced with the presence of a Lion that remembers they are still of this world." before assenting to her point as well
"Yes they have a tendency to chatter and you never understand what they are saying. Not to mention they have a tendency to fight among themselves from time to time." of course if she told him her father was a Kuni it would make all to much sense.
He took a heavy sip of his sake to clear his throat. Good company made even the typically large silent man speak.

They sure talk a lot.
Kaigen stifled a shrug and sipped at his sake.
I appear to be drying reasonably fast. Good.
Too bad about Mai. She seemed a nice enough lady. Then again, I've seen better people die for less reason...

"It is true that we Lion do not often find the humour in things. Perhaps too long have we been the right hand of the emperor and concerned with the intricacies of battle and nuances of court. I try my best to remember I am of this world, and be who I am. Honesty and Sincerity are virtues of Bushido after all"
The tea is warm and bitter, just how Torako likes it. She does find herself longing for the sake the others are drinking though. Restraint she tells herself. You do not need the headache it will bring.
"Does it rain like this often at this time of year? I confess, despite the closeness to my homelands I have not often traveled as far as Kyuden Seppun."

"It's my first time here, so I don't really know," Kasumi said, "in our clan, the Yoritomo are the ones knowing the weather and if they don't, the Moshi can ask the kami about it. We shall simply have to wait until it stops."

Kaigen quirked an eyebrow at that.
I'm no shugenja, but anyone who's been on the roads of the Empire should have something of a weather eye.
"It will be a few hours yet."

From an obscure corner of the main hall, next to their table, the figure of a pilgrim warrior caught their attention, when he directed word towards them. The indefectible band of a musha shugyo was probably the first thing to be noticed in his figure. Gomen kudasai, noble magistrates… and Legionnaires. Mind if I'm graced by a portion of the lantern's light and company? It seems that the innkeeper knows whom to privilege, while this one craves both civilized conversation and a bit of luminosity. His features were not exactly common, perhaps due the strange shape of his pointed nose, however were not grotesque either. As a pilgrim he bore the ronin garments, however something in his tone and moves denounced a noble birth. He bowed as his condition demanded: I'm Taro.

And I'm Empress Toturi the Second.
"Please, feel free to join us."
Probably should have let one of the Magistrates make the call.
Definitely don't care.
"This one is Shiba Kaigen of the First Imperial Legion."

Raised an eyebrow and shot a glance over to the Shiba. Eh someone else probably would have done the same. His eyes looking over to Taro and giving the man a solid once over. obviously assessing and ascertaining his origins or trying to at the very least.
Of course if the man hadn't interrupted he would have had some witty retort towards the Matsu about taming lioness in the confines of his chambers, but after giving another look at his company it was just as well he figured.
It took some effort not to laugh at the headband.. what a joke. The Kaiu he could understand going on pilgrimages, or perhaps a Hiruma duelist, but for Hida's the idea of wandering the land to learn more seemed so insanely asinine to him when 30 seconds in the Wall could kill a man be he grizzled veteran or 12 year old with a stone. With the flowery speech and the bearing he figured either Crane or Imperial Family.. of course he figured anyone that spoke like that was a Crane so there was that.

Kasumi was a bit surprised that a ronin, even a temporary one, would ask this of a group of magistrates and legionnaires. As Kaigen said he could join, she wasn't going to say no now. In fact, it might not be a bad idea that he joined their table, so she could keep an eye on him. "I'm Tsuruchi Kasumi," she introduced herself.

The sound of voices breaks Torako from her daydreams. She remembers her own pilgramage, not so very long ago. Tilling the fields and drawing water from the well. Sleeping in a bed of straw rather than feathers and eating simple grains like wheat and barely. The life of a Ronin is not as fine as that of a great clan samurai, but it is sweet in its humble simplicity.
"I am Matsu Torako, Taro-san." Torako welcomed the pilgrim to their table "It is a pleasure to meet with you I am sure"

You are all so kind… The pilgrim said, taking a seat by the table. One as me, traveling thorough the Empire, not often has the opportunity to stumble at one interesting gathering of different clans behaving so civilized as you have here. The Empire is in peace, clans united for objectives in common… And so are you, two facets of the Imperial Rules… He drank with gusto a cup of water and ordered the server to refill it, using the time to look attentively at each of them after that. If not by that, what could put a Shiba and a Matsu* in the same table nowadays? He raised his cup, seemingly very at will among the strangers, and proposed a toast: For an enduring peace! Kampai!Either he didn't mind risking being taken as a fool, or justifiably his sensei thought a musha shugyo much needed. Taro grinned: How about a little storytelling game? Some distractions are allowed and do not compromise the honor of a samurai… Indeed can be quite elevating.
OOC: probably mentioning this.
