Hello All! I was craving some Emerald Empire and I was poking about the old forum and found this one. I've read a bit of the lore about Rokugan and I do play the table top occasionally, I hope that won't be a problem. Assuming characters are still being accepted I was curious about the Different School advantage from the rpg and if it was applicable within this roleplay. I've currently found Meishodo to be a very interesting school technique but my knowledge of the Unicorn clan is severely lacking when compared to my knowledge of the Scorpion or the Crane. I plan on reading about the Unicorn tomorrow so it's not much of a problem if the Different School advantage can't be used, I figured that I should ask first before wasting anyone's time.

Based on the system we've got here... I think it's actually easier than in the RPG...

I actually played the RPG quite a lot some years ago, so I can do the comparison easily. Here the story is more important than the mechanics, so if you have a good background, a lot is possible and I wouldn't worry too much about the mechanics. We don't have insight levels, school techniques or anything like this anyways. there is no different school advantage in the system here (at least not that I found), so you can just give a good reason why you have a different school in your background and it should be fine. Inside one clan (ex. a Utaku male going to the Moto bushi school because the women in his family don't let him ride horses) is easy, as it happens more often, especially when someone has affinity with the kami and comes from a family without a shugenja school. When you're in a school of a different clan, it's more difficult, but a good background (you were a hostage, a lot of political favours were exchanged, ...) can help you there.
I've been here for 260 posts and during that time I have exactly 1 time that I've put down some mechanics (and I'm not even sure it was needed). Everything else (including one big attempted murder investigation involving a clan champion and the brother of the empress) is done through storytelling.

Hello and Welcome! I hope you have received our Newcomer's Guide by PM. As other players said, the system is very friendly. Whatever the clan you decide to apply is ok, and in the history of this forum, only once a character was refused by not having a coherent bio justifying its distinctions. We have already one character with different School ( my own character) and one character with multiple schools (Kurizumon Te). Both are very coherent on how and why they have this "privilege". Some others had to made small adjustments because they bought distinctions not meant for their classes or clans (like buying Elements, meant for shugenja, and Restrict Knowledge from their own clan, which is redundant). Since I was made admin, I've been thinking a lot about new distinctions. I think, like the former admins, that adding a specific distinction, be it "Multiple Schools" or "Different School" can be used as excuse for poor characters creation, sustained by the fact the system allows incongruent combinations, such as very restricted training being taught for clans who have a historic distrust on each other, knowledge that is new in Rokugan being taught to everyone, etc. Let's say that, the clans have a reason to be like they are, with weaknesses and strenghts that give balance to the setting. If we break this balance, giving to one clan everything, we easily will make the game annoying to everyone else. I'm sure you know it already. Basically meaning... Do a good story justifying why, and you can have Multiple/Different School. Exactly as it was made in the cases of the two current characters having this "invisible" distinction. If you have doubts, you can contact me by PM.
