Imperial Edict The Empress Toturi II decides that the finders of the Amethyst Crown must endure a contest to decide who will be the next Amethyst Champion. This contest will take place in Ryoko Owari, 3 days before the Bon Festival. The event will end by the morning of the last day of the Dog Month, day of the Festival. The contestants are: - Monk Kurimuzon Te from Dragon Clan
- Emerald Magistrate Tsuruchi Kasumi from Mantis
- Shugenja Kitsu Hiraku from Lion Clan
- Emerald Magistrate Hida Izo from Crab Clan
- General Bayushi Satomi from Scorpion Clan
or a contestant directly nominated by them. In such case, the nominee is giving up their right of contending for the honor of becoming the next Amethyst Champion in favor of the person he nominated in his place. The role of Amethyst Champion includes the safeguard the Crown of the Amethyst Champion and to use its powers for the betterment of the people of the Empire. The Amethyst Champion must have a good knowledge of the blade or other weapons, and the arts of speaking, especially poetry and oratory, and must be a worthy and honorable samurai.
The Ruby Champion Utaku Takai will be the responsible to define which tests will take place in the contest, and may choose a panel of judges at his discretion. (Resumed version of the full Imperial Edict, as written by the Voice of the Empress Ide Tadaji in the Second Year of Toturi II's Reign) OOC: The Amethyst champion will not be "a representative of the Empress in distant courts" by default. This attribution of the role was added later in canon and is not adequate in our setting at the moment.

Umm... Poetry? It's worth a shot but I'm not winning any poetry contests. There are parts of the test for Emerald Champion where a heimin merchant would out perform a samurai. Yes, you will probably not win the poetry against Kasumi (I've made my character to be a poet), but if there's unarmed combat for instance I know I won't be able to win against you. And maybe you can ask Togashi (or whoever is dragon champion at the moment) for a poetry tattoo.

The Rules of the Tournament
The tournament has 8 tests and the competitor must perform all of them. The winner will be the one with the highest score at the end of the contest.
Court tests totals are the sum of your distinctions and traits in the test.
Combat tests have special rules described in details later:
The Tests
FIRST DAY:
First test: Game
Randomly sorted (1d6 dice roll or other randomizer method) from 1. Go (Intelligence);
2. Sadane (Awareness);
3. Karuta (Intelligence);
4. Kemari (Agility);
5. Shogi (Intelligence)
6. Kingyo-sukui (Agility)
Second test: Court Wit
A series of questions about Court, Politics, Diplomacy, History and related topics.
Air based test.
SECOND DAY:
Third test: Poetry
Base is Air.
Fourth Test: Iaijutsu/Kenjutsu Duel
Against Ruby or Emerald Champion (please try not to dishonor your dojo by losing too quickly. You are not really expectd to win, so enjoy the moment).
Fifth Test: Unarmed Combat
Arena where the 5 contestants will join 20 other samurai. Every contestant will make part of a team with 1 shugenja and two bushi). The player will set their rolls accordingly and add to the team total.
The combat rules:
Each team has to defend 5 "health points". If the attack total is higher than the defense points, the difference is taken from the total health points of the attacked team. For instance :
Attention:
1. A team can only attack two other teams (but can defend as many attacks as necessary). Choose well.
2. Magic weapons and magic armors are not allowed (duh).
3. Magical methods of healing are not allowed (duh²).
4. At the end of your 2 valid rounds, your final team health points will be your score for the test.
The teams will be picked randomly (dice roll or other randomizer method) from the options below:
1. Shugenja Air spells Rank 3/Air Ring 3 and Hiruma Fire 3/Air 4
2. Shungeja Fire spells Rank 3/Fire Ring 4 and Kakita Fire 2/Air 4
3. Shugenja Earth spells Rank 3/Earth Ring 3 and Utaku Fire 3/Air 2
4. Shugenja Void spells Rank 3/Void Ring 3 and Toku Fire 2/Air 4
5. Shugenja Water spells Rank 3/Water 4 and Seppun Fire 4/Air 3
6. Shugenja Earth spells Rank 2/Earth 2 and Shiba Fire 4/Air 5
7. Shugenja Air spells Rank 2/Air 2 and Hida Fire 5/Air 2
8. Shugenja Fire spells Rank 2/Fire 2 and Daidoji Fire 4/Air 5
9. Shugenja Water Spells rank 4/Water 4 and Ikoma Fire 3/Air 2
10. Matsu Fire 3/Air2 and Moto Fire 4/Air 1 (this team is reserved for the shugenja competitor Kitsu Hiraku)
Sixth test: Strategy
The contestant will have to explain how he/she will defend the Amethyst Crown, considering the resources he will have at hand.
Base for this test is Fire.
THIRD DAY:
Seventh test: Battle (up to 2 weapons of choice)
Same mechanics of the unarmed combat, plus weapons (allowing distinctions related to the weapons).
Teams picked randomly from the list below:
1. Shugenja Air spells Rank 2/Air 2 and Hida Fire 5/Air 2 2. Shugenja Air spells Rank 3/Air Ring 3 and Hiruma Fire 3/Air 4
3. Shugenja Earth spells Rank 2/Earth 2 and Shiba Fire 4/Air 5 4. Shungeja Fire spells Rank 3/Fire Ring 4 and Kakita Fire 2/Air 4
5. Shugenja Void spells Rank 3/Void Ring 3 and Toku Fire 2/Air 4
6. Shugenja Water spells Rank 3/Water 4 and Seppun Fire 4/Air 3
7. Shugenja Fire spells Rank 2/Fire 2 and Daidoji Fire 4/Air 5 8. Shugenja Water Spells rank 4/Water 4 and Ikoma Fire 3/Air 2 9. Shugenja Earth spells Rank 3/Earth Ring 3 and Utaku Fire 3/Air 2 10. Matsu Fire 3/Air2 and Moto Fire 4/Air 1 (this team is reserved for the shugenja competitor Kitsu Hiraku)
Eighth Test: Reputation
The Character reputation also counts and will decrease or increase the final total. This test will not require the character's presence, but may be altered by relevant facts or denounces taken to the knowledge of the Ruby Champion.
Penalized reputations:
Dishonored -1
Lecherous -0.5
Dark Countenance -1
Feared -1
Tainted (automatically out of the competition, duh)
Drunkard -1
Poor Reputation -1
Ruthless -1
Known Murderer -1
Pretentious -0.5
Slow Witted -1
Characters with well spread rumors are also penalized by this rule (every rumor/slander speaking ill of the character counts as -0.5).
Relevant denounces or honored actions during the tournament (see Wild Cards above) will be taken in account as well.
Paragons earn +1 in reputation.
Important: I'm posting the rules in advance so we can discuss and perhaps adjust them. I'm trying to make it as fair as possible, but your opinions about the rules are very important. The tournament is planned to take place after the Summer threads (hopefully everyone will post your Summer threads until the end of the next week), and will be the main event of the Fall. if anyone has extended plans for Fall, let me know.

I'll have to think about my trait, but I've decided to buy 2 wild cards (and I've gifted 200 favours to the storyteller's account for those): Focus (court): +1 in your total at the test. Glorious Day (combat): +1.5 in one round of the combat tests.
I've decided on a trait: Always Ready.

I think I'm going to choose Tempered Body for my trait. For the wild card I have to agree with Kasumi, Focus and Glorious Day are the ones I'll use.

Hello guys. Here we go again with further instructions about the Amethyst Tournament. Tests with random choices
We will use Rolz.org as our dice tool for the picks that need a random element. You probably know the tool and have used it already, but just to be safe I made a little manual on how to roll dice there. The tool doesn't need previous registration. 1> Go to rolz.org/group and type your character's name and the room we are using, as follows: 2> The tool has precise an easy to follow instructions in the same page where you roll the dice, so just make sure you will type "Order", "Gaming", "Duel", "Unarmed Combat" and "Battle" before the rolls. 3> Here's an example of the embeddable codes page (we pick the second option: "Simple BBCode" and paste it in the appropriate post): That's it! We will also determine which order the competitors will endure the tests. This order will be the same in all the tests. Tests are:
• Order: 1D6 • Game: 1D6 (not a problem if other player got the same result before you) • Duel: 1D2 Results: 1- Iaijutsu Duel - Yasuki Hachi 2- Kenjutsu Duel - Utaku Takai • Unarmed Combat: 1D10 (player who got the number first have precedence, in case of repeated results. The result "10" is off limits. In both cases the player must roll again. • Armed combat: 1D10 (player who got the number first have precedence, in case of repeated results. The result "10" is off limits. In both cases the player must roll again. WILD CARDS: Glorious Day: It can be used to perform both attack and defense maneuvers in: • Unarmed Combat • Battle It is valid for ONE ROUND only. Each contender can attack twice in the test. If you use it to attack someone in one round, you cannot use it to defend, and vice versa. The card use must be declared AFTER the outcome of the round (so you choose whether you will add to your defense, or to your attack) Focus: You add +1 in the result of your court test, for instance: Player 1 performed his Sadane roll and got 7. He was focused in the game and added +1 to his roll, and now has a total of 8.
The card use must be declared BEFORE the outcome of your court test. Honored Behavior: You can choose a defending player and declare your intervention AFTER the round (describing in your post how your intervention changed the outcome of the scene). The card is valid for ONE ROUND. Sabotage: The user picks the target, and declares the action BEFORE the test, specifying what is being done (spoiled food, broken weapon/item, and so on). This crime cannot be disputed. Bribe/Blackmail Rival's Assistant: The user will declare the target immediately BEFORE the test and ROUND it will occur. DISPUTE: The "standard TN" for notice there's something wrong is 8 (representing the Rival Assistant Stats used to cover the action).
