I'll put my unnoficial answer and, once we check it, it'll be replaced by an official one. The previous "rule and story team" didn't let a detailed explanation for the distinctions they chose to use, so we go usually for the book (4h edition). Nevertheless, this is a disadvantage that's not found in the book. I'd interpret it as a sort of "infamous" disadvantage. Much like being known for killing someone of importance, and somehow, being absolved by either having a good reason for it, or by using other means, as social leverage etc, to go scott-free. For hitoriki, doesn't it seems like a mix of "kensei" and "ruthless", maybe?
EDIT: And of course, the very concept of hitoriki is better depicted by the Kenshinzen of the Crane clan (the book of War - 3rd edition gives an excellent explanation about their battlefield techniques).

How does the contested Distinction mechanic work? Say I need to track and investigate, which Distinctions affect my tracking? I assume my school(Hiruma Bushi) helps but I don't see any other Distinctions geared towards tracking unless we count Magistrates.

Basically, the contest is only used when there's the possibility of an active negative reaction/result from a PC or NPC. In the case there are not this possibility, there's no need to test distinctions. The system was created by its designer with the basic idea that the player will use common sense to choose the distinction they will apply to a test, and will not push ineffective or unrelated ones just to "build volume". Tip: Carefully consider why and how the distinction is being applied in your RP before using the distinction OOC. Also, currently we don't wish to change the design of the contested distinctions mechanics, so there's no plans to add skills to the Glory shop, as the design of the rules exalts the School over the individual skills (or everyone would, at some point, have all skills, in and out their respective schools, causing a collapse in the mechanics system). Bear in mind that the use of a dispute only makes sense in few occasions when your RP can't decide it alone, and more often, against PCs. In your case, considering the distinctions you bought, in the case of investigation or tracking, you could use the Element (Water-Perception), and your Family/School, Hiruma, as distinctions, and add the initiator trait (+1). Now, in my opinion, from theh distinctions currently available in the Glory Shop, some of the below could apply to a tracking/investigation test (depending on what/where you are trying to track or investigate: magistrate ninja an appropriated ancestor, as Hiruma Ancestor, or other. an appropriate Forbidden Knowledge (depending on what or where) tactical genius (depending on terrain/place, known behavior of a group) Dishonorable (depending on the techniques applied) and yet, your rank or position, depending if the investigation can use some power influence to get an answer properly responded, etc. etc...

I've noticed that in the glory shop there is nothing under allies. Will that come later, or is that covered with the favours section?

Its something that was talked about but just never got around to being implemented, what with everything else going on around here. Basically, if you can make it into a good story and it makes sense for your character, you can write in allies, such as having a yojimbo if it made sense to do so, or a childhood friend who is a samurai of a different Clan. The admins will of course correct anything wrong I have said here, but this is the best response I can give for the time being Hope it helps,, and I hope I'm not giving you completely incorrect information lol
